This guest post is written by Stuart Cooke. We are excited to share his tips on the best vacation destinations for vegans.
One of the reasons that lots of us travel is not just to see new places but to also experience new cultures and try out the local cuisines. After all, you don’t go to Italy without trying a pizza or Mexico without sampling an enchilada, right?
But the problem is, when you’re a vegan, the options can be a bit limiting, and there are only so many times you can eat a side salad or bowl of chips.
The good news is, as more people embrace the vegan lifestyle, restaurants and eateries across the world are increasingly offering delicious vegan options, with some very vegan-friendly cities even offering entirely vegan cafes, food stalls, supermarkets and more.
So if you’re planning on going travelling soon, you might be looking for a fun, exciting location that is going to offer plenty of plant-based options.
And that’s why we’ve put together this guide – to inspire your next getaway. Below are X of the best vacation destinations for vegans.
So what are you waiting for? Get out there and get eating!
1. Berlin, Germany
Thanks to its culture, food, history and incredible architecture, Berlin has been one of the world’s most popular cities to visit for decades. But now, thanks to its plant-based cuisine, it is also a great place to visit as a vegan.
In fact, the city was ranked vegan capital of the world, in no small part because there are an estimated 80,000 vegans living there and more than 50 entirely plant-based restaurants. On top of that, a further 300 venues are offering vegetarian and vegan options on their menu.
If you visit Berlin, you’ll be free to indulge yourself in delicious starters, mains, desserts and even plant-based twists on classic German cuisines – because no one should miss out on a Bratwurst whilst in Germany.
2. Prague, Czech Republic
Prague is well-regarded for having some of the best beer in the world, but what about the food? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that after a busy day of sightseeing, taking in the architecture and exploring cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards, you’ll have plenty of dining options.
There are restaurants, cafes and bars offering plant-based dishes from around the world. For example, a firm favourite amongst the vegan community is Pastva and its vegan twists on Italian food.
There are also cafes serving plant-based brunches and classic Czech cuisine, such as a seitan bagel with fried vegan cheese. Or, if you’re in the mood for something quick and tasty, you can grab some bistro-style vegan versions of hot dogs, burgers and salad bowls to take away.
So no matter what you’re in the mood for, you’re sure to find something to suit every taste during your stay in Prague.
3. Sydney, Australia
Not only is Sydney famous for its beaches, harbour and of course, the Sydney Opera House, but it is also a plant-based paradise. There is a range of restaurants, cafes and bars across the city that offer unique menus with plenty of vegan options.
In fact, Sydney has its own entirely vegan pub called The Green Lion, as well as a plant-based burger stop called Soul Burger. This means there are plenty of tasty fast-food options for you when you’re out and about.
Alternatively, if you want to sit down for a delicious vegan meal in the evenings, you can enjoy Gigi’s Pizzeria for fresh pizza, Otto Ristorante for perfect pasta dishes, Bad Hombres for a Mexican feast or Little Turtle for Thai dishes.
So, you’re looking for fun, sun and delicious vegan food on your vacation, Sydney should definitely be on your bucket list!
4. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is a great vacation destination if you love dramatic history, flamboyant architecture, cool street art, bustling nightlife and great vegan food.
Though you might have been misled into thinking that Hungary was all stew and dumplings, you would be very wrong! There are lots of different plant-based restaurants and dining options for you to choose from, including sampling traditional Hungarian food at Napfényes restaurant and pastry shop.
But with so much to see and do whilst you’re there if you’d prefer to grab a quick bite to eat whilst you’re out exploring the city, you can grab a fluffy vegan pizza from Vegażżi Nápolyi or visit and Asian-inspired vegan canteen for plant-based sushi, compelling and more.
There really is something to suit every mood and occasion.
5. Los Angeles, USA
Finally, when you think of LA, you probably think of the healthy food scene, eco-friendly locals, fitness fanatics and glorious sunshine. So it makes sense that this would be one of the world’s most vegan-friendly destinations, right?
And the food certainly lives up to the city’s reputation. From fancy restaurants with striking decor to innovative and luxurious sushi joints, the vegan food there is just as fancy as the residents of LA.
Whether you are looking for a restaurant, cafe or bistro, you can sample signature dishes such as buckwheat flax pancakes, tofu scramble, crispy cauliflower tacos and tangled Thai salad.
Just be prepared to do a little translating when it comes to the names of these dishes because the locals tend to favour adjectives such as ‘enchanted’ and ‘enthusiastic’ when labelling their meals. Perhaps they hope to make the food sound just as magical as the city.
Are you ready to book your plane tickets and set off?
As the world embraces plant-based cuisine, this list is by no means exhaustive. However, these are certainly some of the most exciting and vegan-friendly places to go on vacation right now.
